Should i file a lawsuit?

I was hired at a call center...had a schedule and everything..i was supposed to start monday...but before i started they were going to do a background check...well my last employer lied and gave me a bad reference saying i had bad attendance, which is a lie and i have the managers who were below her that will write a letter saying that there was never a problem with attendance.......now gap said because a employer is not willing to re-hire me they can't employ me...even though i was already technically hired...my mom wants to sue gap and my previous employer..because I turned down other offers for jobs because i thought i was working for gap. and she wants to sue the previous employer for causing me to lose out on income..and for slander(i quit the last job because the boss was extremely mean..calling me a and a ***** because i wasnt able to come into work on my LAST day there because I had strep throat and had a doctors note..it was just a terrible job)...any advice please?
