Is white distilled vinegar the same thing as regular vinegar?

There are basically 2 types of vinegar. White distilled is the clear vinegar. The other is Cider Vinegar and is made from apples and is brownish in color and has a better odor than the plain white vinegar. (I think!) and a better flavor in foods.
